My Beautiful Broken Shell: Words of Hope to Refresh the Soul
Published in Hardcover by Garborg's Heart 'N' Home (September, 1998)
Authors: Carol Hamblet Adams, Craig Lueck, and Carol Hamblet Adams
Average review score:

A Book to be shared!
When I wanted to share this wonderful little book with the women from my church I put together a program. I found about 20 pictures of the sea that I have taken and the same number of shells ( some broken ) I presented it like the books of our chilhood. As I read the book out loud I would, on occassion, say "pass" and they would pass the picture and the shell to the person next to them. That way they were able to visit the sea and feel the book as well as hear it.
I have given many copies away. It is a great source of inspiration. My suggestion would be; share it!

Inner Peace
After losing my 12 year old son, my soul felt lost. I happened upon this beautiful book in a card store and felt drawn to it. Not only did I feel a connection of being "broken" but my son was a "special needs child" and I saw such an appreciation of seeing the beauty in everything - especially the broken. The original book has long since been given away, as was the second one I purchased. I still long to be able to just pick it up and rekindle my appreciation of where I am.

great book to share with a hurting friend for comfort
I think this book is a great tool for hurting hearts. I am an R.N. and have a calling to comfort people. Sometimes it is hard to find the words but Carol so beautifully enables the reader to feel the pain and hopefully start breaking down barriers to start the healing process.I have a neighbor now disabled from M.S. have promised her I would visit and have tea. I have to admit I was apprehensive about going. I am now looking forward to our visit and sharing My beautiful Broken Shell.Thank you Carol for sharing with us so we can also share.God bless your work.

Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview
Published in Hardcover by Intervarsity Press (April, 2003)
Authors: J. P. Moreland and William Lane Craig
Average review score:

A Definitive Introduction
We live in a modern culture that is not interested in the cultivation of the mind. This is true inside the church as well as outside. In "Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview", authors Moreland and Craig, who are among the best in Christian scholars, place all of the fundamental concepts needed to provide a strong foundation for intellectual growth in one volume. The book is primarily written for the Christian but is very accessible for the non-Christian who is interested in the debate.

The book begins by laying down a philosophical groundwork concerning concepts such as logic & rationality, epistemological issues such as truth and knowledge, and various important issues in metaphysics. Gradually, as the concepts build, the book covers areas in philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, ethics, concepts of God, arguments for the existence of God, Christian doctrines, etc.

This book is a philosophical text and should be treated as such. That is, it should be rigorously studied and not just read. Most people who have not contended with weighty concepts in philosophy and religion may find some sections tedious and difficult to grapple with-hence the need to study. Fear not however, for the book is intended for the beginner and intermediate levels of understanding. Bold face text will alert readers to key definitions and concepts, and the chapters end with summary and list of concepts that should be mastered. Footnotes are placed at the end of book so as to not clutter the text.

Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview is an indispensable scholarly work that combines classical apologetics with fundaments philosophical concepts. It is sure to provide a solid platform by which the Christian can conduct his or her intellectual life. It also exemplifies the intellectual rigor that we have come to know in J.P. Moreland and William Lane Craig.

Aristotle once said that the unexamined life is not worthy to be lived. With this book, one is well on their way to an examined life. It is high quality indeed

Pure Excellence
This book has given me a philosophical grounding that I never believed I could attain. Everything is explained thoroughly and (in my opinion) in a way easily understood by the beginner. The only thing that is needed is a desire to learn.

This book is so excellent--thank you Dr. Craig and Dr. Moreland!!

A Compelling Presentation of Christian Philosophy
I highly recommend this outstanding book. Moreland and Craig are two intellectual leaders in a growing movement of Christian philosophers who have offered to both the general public and the academic world sophisticated and compelling arguments for why it is rational, and sometimes obligatory, to embrace the beliefs that are central to the Christian worldview--e.g., the existence of God, the existence of the soul, the reasonableness of miracles, the coherence of the Incarnation, the possibility of theological knowledge, etc. If you have an interest in philosophy and its relationship to the rationality of Christian belief, do yourself a favor and buy this book...

Playing Beyond the Scoreboard
Published in Paperback by Winning Edge Publications (29 November, 2001)
Author: Craig Hillier
Average review score:

A MUST FOR ALL TEAM CAPTAINS
To All Team Captains,

Playing Beyond the Scoreboard is a wonderfully designed book that will ultimately help every team captain, player, coach, and parent. Personal experiences shared by Mr. Hillier are used to supplement a great understanding of what it takes to build a "successful team." His experience in mentoring, guiding, and teaching thousands of youth annually in the hundreds of seminars that he teaches throughout the United States, gives him a unique perspective on the requirements of successful "team captains" today.

This book should be used by school administrators as a blue print to help design a schools philosophy and action plan on how to create and maintain successful teams, regardless of the activity, sports related or not! After reading and implementing this book I wish all team captains good luck in helping to create the team's "season of significance!"

A team leader must!
WOW! I have 30 years in teaching and coaching and this book is one of the best for student leaders! It is easy to read, gets students involved, something they will enjoy and gives life lessons. I have run many leadership workshops for teachers, coaches and students and the ideas in this book are great. I will be using many of the ideas myself to help improve our youth and their leadership style.

Don't miss this opportunity to reach many of your young leaders. All they need is this type of guidance and things will fall into place.

Great job Craig and lets have more!

Gary

A MUST read for Team Captains
As an Athletic Director I am constantly amazed that we expect our team captains to step in and know exactly what we expect from them (if anything) as a captain. Craig's book is an awesome reference book for coaches and captain's alike. It really offers great ideas on what is expected of the captain and how to use this position in the most positive way. If you want your captains to really be leaders, this book will show them how!

The Programmer's Introduction to Visual Basic. NET
Published in Paperback by SAMS (05 December, 2001)
Author: Craig Utley
Average review score:

A very nice start for people who know VB6
Granted I consider myself an experienced VB Programmer from VB6. I picked up a copy of this book and Visual Studio.net and was developing ADO.net enabled stuff easy. Multithreading is also done exceptionally well in this book. Web Services is something I will have to try next as well, and that chapter looks good as well.

In short this book is not for those who are starting out, but rather those who are veterans in the industry who know the VB syntax and want to try all the best that Visual Basic.net has to offer.

The Best book out there on the topic....
This book is compact and to the point. If you are a VB6 developer who wants to go .NET, this is the best place to start. The books includes no bs, just content. The Author clearly knows what we VB6 developers need, a smooth transition between DNA and .NET, and provides it in a relatively small 300+ page book. This book is more valuable than any wrox book on the topic. Wrox is a great publisher, but sams stoled their food this time. WARNING: This book wouldn't be classified as an "advance" book, but a instead, one that makes it easier to work with all the new technology. This is were all current VB Developers should start.

Great job.
This is a tribute to how books of this sort ought to be written. The title might better read 'A VB programmer's guide', however, because it bridges the gap between 'traditional' VB and VB.NET. Clear, consise, and comprehensive, the author is obviously experienced in his craft. Professional programmers especially will appreciate this crisply-written volume.

Revelation and the End of All Things
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (May, 2001)
Author: Craig R. Koester
Average review score:

Like putting on spectacles
One of the world's leading experts on the apocalypse (I believe he is presently writing a replacement for Ford's commentary on Revelation in the Anchor Bible series), Koester has poured biblical scholarship, historical knowledge, cultural critique and pastoral care into this book. What emerges, however, is no inaccessible tome, but a delightful, sometimes humorous, piercingly relevant, remarkably brief read in engaging prose.

This book clears away the cobwebs surrounding the final book of the New Testament. The first 5th of the book (40 pages) is an enlightening synopsis of the history of interpretations and where they came from, as well as the impact they have had on world history. The rest of the book engages section by section with the text and is packed with deep insights simply expressed. Reading this book is like putting on the spectacles you always needed for the first time. For anyone wanting to understand John's revelation, I know of no better place to start.

The best book on the book of Revelation I've ever read.
I've never read anything before that helped me understand the book of Revelation like this book does. Not only is it elegantly written in attention getting prose, but Craig Koester's interpretations are characterized by careful theological reflection. It is also happily free from many of the sensational and erroneous reflections that are heard coming from many of the apocalyptic television pulpits of America. I also like the way Koester understands the 7 cycles of visions in Revelation and how how one blends into the next one. He points out that every vision ends with a triumphant vision of Christ, which is something I hadn't quite noticed before, but won't soon forget.

A previous reviewer pointed out that this book has no study questions, and for this reason I would hesitate to use it as a textbook for a Sunday school class. This is the kind of book you would give to the well read member of your parish or your family. And if you happen to be in some kind of ministry, then this is would be one of the books I would want with me if I were preparing to teach a class on Revelation or if I was preparing a sermon. It is easy to read, hard to put down at times, and always thought provoking.

Thorough and Thoughtful
Thorough and thoughtful, this is no pop-culture hype of the "end times" but it's not a white-wash either. It reads like a great professor's lecture notes -- measured, authoritative, yet clearly in touch with both his sbuject and with today.

The first 1/5 of the book is overview, then there are sections dealing with 3-5 chapters (of Revelation) at a time as the author takes us image by image through Revelation.

Koester uses his encyclopedic knowledge both to debunk the typical over-interpretation and predictions for Revelation, but also to evoke the biblical book's disturbing points of relevance for today.

This would be a great resource for any person or group studying the final book of the Bible. It doesn't include any study questions, though. It is scholarly yet very readable.

Seismic Loss Estimates for a Hypothetical Water System: A Demonstration Project (Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering Monograph, No.)
Published in Paperback by American Society of Civil Engineers (August, 1991)
Author: Craig E. Taylor
Average review score:

Superb analysis; broadly applicable
Well written, well researched book that is a must-read for practitioners and policy-makers. Useful not only for Seattle, but findings are applicable to other water systems.

The best book I have read on seismic risks to water systems.
Although the technical matter may seem dry, the writing style is extremely nuanced making this a fascinating and useful book. The author advocates a dynamic analysis of lifeline systems using leading edge mathematical models and seismic risk methods.

A must read in the field of hazard risk reduction.
Excellent analysis of seismic risk for a given water system with important applications to other sites. The writing style will appeal to a broad range of audiences.

Material Science : The Reference
This has to be the best book on material science basics that I have seen ! (I've seen too many) From atomic structure to Brillouin Zones everything is there, in plain english!

A great advanced intro. to materials science.
- This is a wonderful academic introduction to materials.

It's probably most siginficant as an early intellectual product of the present CEO of Intel (done when he was just an obscure professor).

The Rest of Our Lives
Published in Paperback by Waverly House Pub (December, 2000)
Author: Dawn Connelly-Craig
Average review score:

Matters of the Heart
A story for matters of the heart . The Rest of Our Lives was a story of love, marriage, passion, betrayal , divorce , tragedy, death and single parentness not necessary in that order.

While I enjoyed The Rest of Our lives is was not as dramatic as I thought reading the synposis . I will admit there were a few twist to the story that I really did not expect and enjoyed even though they hurt . I was expecting more drama especially during the betrayal , when she went to visit Malcolm. I would actually rate this one 3.5 - 3.8 * Even though it was a good read it was a little long for me.

It was not quite 4* but certainly more than 3* !

WOW!!
At first I could not get into this book, but boy o boy once I did I was plesantly surprised with how good it was! The characters were well intertwined and developed. I was so happy for Ms. Jewel. But that ending totally through me for a loop!! Although I wish they would have dug a little deeper into the emotions of the main characters towards the end, what a wonderful, wonderful story!

P.S. Did anyone other than me notice how they kept getting Malcom and Justin mixed up! They may also want to get some better proofreaders.

Captavating
This novel was so heart warming it made you feel like you there!! A story about Love, Marriage & Tragedy. If you are looking for a good novel this is it a DEFINITE must read.

Running Microsoft Excel 97
Published in Paperback by Microsoft Press (January, 1997)
Authors: Mark Dodge, Chris Kinata, and Craig Stinson
Average review score:

Excellent Guide-Web support gone
This book covers all the features of EXCEL 97 very clearly with good examples.

Unfortunately the support page for the WEB material has gone ...END

Everything needed and still easy to read.
Sometimes the Microsoft book is good and sometimes it isn't- this time it's the best. The book is a catalog of everything, with clear instructions. There's no need to read it cover to cover, though that will give you lots of ideas for what can be done. Just look in the index when you need something and flip back to the clear instructions and helpful illustrations. The book's pretty hefty, so the included book-on-CD is the best way to tote it around as a reference. Keep the CD at work for surreptitious reference and be the office Excel expert!

The best Excel 97 reference, period.
In my work as a technical editor, I've had reason to review many of the other 800+-page books available on Excel 97. This one stands out, far and away, as the top reference available. It covers more than any of the other titles, and does so more thoroughly. For example, this is the only book I've found that covers creating custom numeric formats.
